NYF Radio Awards Grand Jury member Stefan Frech, host NDR2 & hr3, Germany said, “We had wonderful entries from all over the world. What is fascinating is that more and more radiomaniacs concentrate on very difficult and serious topics. They represent not only outstanding radio crafts but also braveness and great journalism. Obviously radio is not only games’n gags!”
Mark Travis, New York Festivals Advisory Board/Grand Jury Member, had this to say about this year’s finalists. “This year’s field features perhaps the greatest concentration of “heavy hitters” as compared to any previous competition I’ve judged. Not only are we hearing the usual world-class reporting from India and South East Asia and in-depth features from the BBC and CBC, but also several long-time mainstays of the industry have also come to play: This American Life, The Thistle & Shamrock, WGBH, ESPN, Bloomquist Media, and Bob Edwards to name but a few. In keeping with the competition’s mission, this is truly the world’s finest radio. The breadth of the entries this year is also extremely wide-reaching. Judging has been downright fun this year as not every medal-worthy piece is a tear-jerker; rather, there are several outstanding music, satire, and sports programs in the mix.”
This year the competition launched several new categories to honor the exceptional work created by the radio community. Finalists included: “Bob Edwards Talks with Children’s Book Author Jack Gantos” Sirius XM Radio USA (Best Interview); “The Thistle & Shamrock” Fiona Ritchie Productions Scotland (Best Interview) and Ciarán Hinds for “The Dreaming of Roger Casement by Patrick Mason” RTE Radio 1 Ireland (Best Performance by an Actor). Other new categories with Finalists included Social Issues, Current Affairs, and Student Drama.
