New York, NY - July 2, 2009: The New York Festivals World's Best Advertising, now in its 52nd year, announced its 2009 United Nations Department of Public Information Winners. Since 1990, NYF and the United Nations Department of Public Information have honored public service advertising that best exemplifies the ideas and goals of the United Nations. This year’s UN Jury selected two Mixed Media campaigns and one TV/Cinema campaign to receive UNDPI Medals. Lowe Sydney received a Gold Award, Leo Burnett, Chicago was honored with Silver and a Bronze UNDPI Medal was awarded to McCann Erickson, Lisboa. In addition seven UNDPI Finalists were awarded.
The 2009 panel of United Nations judges honored public service messages this year that focused awareness on the following issues: protection of the environment, human trafficking and child exploitation, domestic abuse, endangered species, aids prevention, and civic education.
Lowe, Sydney was honored with the Gold UNDPI Award for the Mixed Media campaign website "Tree People" for client Genesis Energy. The website, designed to bring attention to climate change in New Zealand features a virtual forest community with individually sponsored trees. The sponsored trees grow as results of New Zealanders making pledges promising to make small changes in their lifestyle, changes designed to help the environment.
The Silver UNDPI Award was awarded to Leo Burnett Chicago for their Mixed Media campaign titled "GCFD Integrated Campaign" for their client, The Greater Chicago Food Depository. The campaign's approach cleverly featured everyday food items such as spaghetti, soup, broccoli and PB & J as luxury items, driving home the point that food should not be thought of as a luxury, but as a necessity.
McCann Erickson, Lisboa, received the Bronze Medal for their UNDPI Award winning television spot "Will" for the Portuguese League Against AIDS. The public service spot features a handsome young man reading his last will as we see scenes of him interacting with family, friends and his girlfriend during happier times. The poignant scenes married with the heartfelt voiceover convey how the man’s absence will leave an empty place in each of their lives.
The following companies were honored as 2009 UNDPI Finalists: TWBA/RAAD, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates for their client City of Hope; Jung von Matt/Alster Werbeaugentur GmbH, Hamburg, Germany for The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation; Ogilvy Group, Netherlands for MTV Networks International; Colman Rasic Carrasco, East Sydney, Australia for their client MTV EXIT Foundation; Ponto de Criacao, Sao Paulo, Brazil for client Multishow - Reclame; JWT, Shanghai for CDEP, China’s Environment Protection Fund; and Creativia, Seoul, Korea for Korea Heart Federation.
