New York, NY - July 22, 2009:The first ever 2009 World Tour of New York Festivals World's Best Advertising in Chicago wrapped up this year's premier awards gala and awards presentation at the historic Chicago Cultural Center. BBDO World Wide received the prestigious Network of the Year Award; BBDO New York was awarded the coveted Agency of the Year Award; Hamburg's kempertrautmann was honored with the newly minted New Agency of the Year Award; and the 2009 New York Festivals Lifetime Achievement Award recipient was legendary Chicago comedy director, Joe Sedelmaier.
The Network of the Year and the Advertising Agency of the Year awards are prestigious honors presented to the company that produces the finest caliber of work, and the company that garners the most awards in the competition, respectively. BBDO World Wide was honored last night with the title of Network of the Year and with a cache of awards, including a Grand Trophy, 29 Gold Award Medals, 24 Silver, and 31 Bronze, along with a monumental 72 Finalist Certificates. And BBDO New York, recognized for their stellar work, was bestowed with Agency of the Year. This New York agency was awarded the distinguished Grand Trophy for the Mixed Media campaign, HBO/Big. In addition, the agency garnered 6 Gold Award Medals, 10 Silver, 13 Medals and 32 Finalist Certificates.
Dr. Michael Trautmann, Managing Partner of kempertrautmann, Hamburg was presented with the just launched New Agency of the Year Award at last night's awards ceremony. The five year old agency was awarded an impressive 3 Gold Award Medals, 6 Silver, 3 Bronze and 11 Finalist Certificates. The New Agency of the Year award was created to allow new agencies to compete and be recognized for their creative achievements, their ability to garner international exposure, and the impact their work has on the marketplace.
"Becoming the first Global Newcomer Agency of the Year, selected by the renowned New York Festivals, is the ultimate reward - coming just five years after kempertrautmann was established. We would like to thank our staff, our clients, our competitors, and the New York Festivals organization and jury for helping us win this completely unexpected award," said Dr. Trautmann.
Joe Sedelmaier, the brilliant award winning commercial director known for his quirky humor and off beat casting for client's such as FedEx, Wendy's and Alaska Air, was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award. The prestigious award was presented to Mr. Sedelmaier by Ad Age Magazine columnist Bob Garfield and Joe's son, animation director JJ Sedelmaier.
CumminsNitro, Australia was awarded the prestigious Grand Trophy in the 2009 New York Festivals Advertising Awards. The Brisbane based agency received the Grand Trophy in the Digital + Interactive category for their groundbreaking campaign for Tourism Queensland, "Best Job in the World." NYF Grand Trophies were also awarded to the following agencies: BBDO/Proximity Malaysia, "Two World's" for client Jeep in the Print category; BBDO NY, USA, "HBO Audio Mural Installations" for client HBO/Big Love in the Mixed Media category; Big Ant International, "What Goes Around Comes Around" for client Global Coalition for Peace in the Outdoor category; Crispin Porter + Bogusky, USA, "Whopper Sacrifice" for client Burger King, in the Avant-Garde category; and Publicis, France, "Rewind City" for client Orange TV, in the TV/Cinema category.
This year, the 2009 NYF World's Best Advertising recognized that advertisers were continuing to shift more dollars into new interactive messages. Print and Television entries continued to decline this year. Grand Trophy winners, CumminsNitro's "Best Job in the World" and Crispin Porter + Bogusky, "Whopper Sacrifice" confirmed the trend that breakthrough work is increasing in the Avant-Garde and Digital + Interactive competitions. This shift resulted in an incredible 60% increase in those competition's 2008's entries.
New York Festivals (NYF) Advertising Awards also hosted two afternoon THINKBIG Speaker Series, focusing on Digital, Interactive, Avant-garde and Social Media. Chicago’s top advertising executives participated in the "Is Craft Dead” panel discussion, moderated by HIVE Awards Executive Director, Alan Wolk. Panel members included: Dennis Ryan, Chief Executive Officer, Element 79; Steffan Postaer, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Euro RSCG; Todd Donohue, Creative Director, Critical Mass; Diane Ruggie, Senior VP, Group CD, DDB: and David Hernandez, Managing Director/ECD, Tribal DDB.
"Social Media: How to Profit from It & Get Clients to Buy Into It" included the following industry experts: John Geletka, Director at Ratchet; Len Kendall, Media Strategist, Edelman Digital; Rob Saker , Business Partner, Marketing Technology at Miller Coors; Ian Sohn, Senior VP, Marketing and Digital Influence at Ogilvy Public Relations; and Vinny Warren, CEO, The Escape Pod.
Grand Trophy Award recipients were selected from the top scoring Gold medalists in all categories by the NYF International Grand Jury. This year's GRANDJURY honored the "World's Best Advertising" from 71 countries around the world, awarding 6 Grand Trophies, 149 Gold Medals, 173 Silver Medals and 243 Bronze Medals in the following competitions: Art & Technique, Avant-Garde, Collateral, Design, Digital + Interactive, Mixed Media, Outdoor, Print, TV/Cinema, Radio, and Student.
The 2009 Grand Jury was comprised of 255 Senior Creative Directors from 56 countries, representing the largest and most diverse jury of any advertising competition in the world.
The New York Festivals World's Best Advertising will also host award presentations in Manila July 23rd, Shanghai, July 25th, Santiago de Chile August 7th, Mumbai September 18th, and Madrid in late September.
