United Nations Department of Public Information Awards Go To Radio Netherlands, WUNC and Youth Radio

June 29, 2007: Radio Netherlands of Hilversun, the Netherlands, WUNC of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and Youth Radio of Berkeley, California were presented The New York Festivals (NYF) 2007 Radio Broadcasting United Nations Department of Public Information (UNDPI) Awards at the Tribeca Rooftop last night. Mr. Raymond Sommereyns, Director, Outreach Division, UNDPI, presented this year’s awards to the winners.

Radio Netherlands received the UNDPI Gold Medal for their entry "Durga's Court: Social Justice at Work in India," a community portrait of a local judicial system in which litigating parties are joined by supporters who try to out-argue each other under the auspices of a judge untrained in the formal rules of judiciary law.

The Silver went to WUNC, North Carolina Public Radio, for "Ahmed’s Diary," an ongoing news story that traces a year in the life of an Iraqi man who witnesses the transformation of Baghdad, his hometown, into a war-town place filled with torture and random deaths.

Youth Radio Berkeley in Berkeley, California, won Bronze for their entry "Race in Your Face," in which young reporters delve into the complexity surrounding racial identity and discrimination. In one segment titled "Whiteness" Clare Robbins explores the way Caucasians are coming together to both educate each other on racial insensitivity while reclaiming their own ethnic identities, which is often lost by the generic label White.

In conjunction with UNDPI, New York Festivals awards Radio Broadcasting entries that best exemplify the ideals and goals of the United Nations. Nominees for these awards were selected from radio programs that achieved Finalist status in The New York Festivals 2007 Radio Broadcasting Awards competition. Judges for the UNDPI Awards are UNDPI officials.
