NYF Television Programming and Promotion Awards Announces 2009 Winners; Australia and the United States Each Win Two Grand Awards

The 2009 New York Festivals Television Programming and Promotions Awards announced this year s award-winning entries. Jurors honored 4 Grand Trophy winners, awarding Australia and the United States with two Grand Trophies each. In addition, 93 Gold Medals, 112 Silver and 104 Bronze Medals were recognized for their distinguished work in this year s competition.
Sydney Australia s Southern Star International accepted the Grand Trophy in the Family Programs category for Meerkat Manor: The Next Generation, a unique soap opera featuring the life and times of a community of meerkats. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation received the Grand Award for their documentary Jihad Sheilas, winning in the category of Best New Documentary/Special. This award-winning entry chronicles the journey of two Australian women from regional Australia to their conversion to fundamentalist Islam.
Grand Award winners from the United States include: Discovery Network of Miami Florida, for their piece Planet Earth: The Filmmaker s Story, winning in the category of Promotional Program; along with CNN of Atlanta, Georgia receiving the Grand in the Environment & Ecology category for Planet in Peril. The four-hour documentary takes the viewer to places around the world, exposing threats to the world s environment and concentrates on the main issues threatening earth and its inhabitants: climate change, deforestation, species loss and overpopulation.
The 2009 Television Programming and Promotion Awards received entries from 30 countries, spanning 5 continents. The competition, now in its 52nd year, honors "The World s Best Work" in categories such as news, documentary, information and entertainment programming, in addition to music video, infomercial, promotions, spots, openings and IDs.
All entries in this year s competition were screened by judging panels, which are comprised of producers, directors, writers, and other media professionals from around the globe. All award winning entries are promoted by our network of representatives in 62 countries around the world.
