New York Festivals, in Collaboration with the United Nations Department of Public Information, established the United Nations Awards in 1990 to honor programming that best exemplifies the aims and ideals of the United Nations.

The Department of Public Information selects a special panel of UN officials which convenes each year to determine Gold, Silver, and Bronze United Nations Awards winners.
